Upcycling for a good cause

May 05 2022

Please support our Transition Year students in their Global Citizenship Education project to raise money for charity.

As part of their class work on SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, they spent the year learning about Fast Fashion and the importance of Sustainability with their teacher Mrs. Kelly.

The students visited Charity shops in Carlow and had talks from the respective managers on the great and much needed work they do for the Carlow Community.

They learned how important it is to buy second hand and up-cycle things and this gave them an idea for a project. They decided to buy a second hand piece of furniture and completely up-cycle it and transform it to be a beautiful piece for a home once again.

To begin their project they revisited the charity shop ‘A Partnership with Africa’ (APA, Hacketstown Rd, Pollerton, Carlow), to search for a piece. This is an Irish Charity which supports a partnership-based approach to development wherever it works. They support projects that focus on areas such as preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, engaging with domestic workers and bar workers to challenge exploitative working conditions, ensuring community inclusion of ethnic minorities and the establishment of clean water sources for rural communities.

There they found a very special piece, as you will appreciate from the fabulous photos. The students were very grateful for the visit, tips and advice along the way from Connie and Nicola from ‘Con’s Creations Craft Shop’ in Castledermot, (www.conscreations.ie).

The students plan to donate all of the money raised from the sale of the Dresser back to APA. You can see the story of their work on the Presentation College Carlow Twitter page. The dresser is made from Maple Wood and would be a stand out talking point in any home, coffee shop or restaurant. They used French Scotch Mist furniture and the measurements are122cms wide, 52cms in depth and 189cms in height.
