Students in Presentation College were immersed in French culture and language as our annual “Semaine Française” commenced on Monday, 19th February. Walking through the main corridor, one’s curiosity was aroused with posters, flags and suitable decor, representing our interest in the French way of life. Signs translated into the French language and a general spirit of camaraderie throughout the school: La Semaine Française a commençé!
Throughout the week, all French students enjoyed many activities. One of the most popular was a taste of a traditional French “petit déjeuner” of croissants, pain au chocolat and of course baguette!
Third Year students regaled in the theatrical performance of “La Visite”, performed by French Theatre For Schools, with some students even brave enough to test out their acting skills in French!
Fifth and Sixth Year students headed to our local George Bernard Shaw theatre to watch “Ma Vie de Courgette”, a film nominated for an Oscar for best-animated feature. This film focuses on nine-year-old Icare, nicknamed Courgette, who arrives at a foster home after a series of difficult family events. The film proved very popular among the students.
First Year students tested their geographical expertise as they tried to find the French flags hidden throughout their Area and lead them to some delicious treasure. Congratulations to Abigail Wilkinson of Second Year, who won the art competition with a beautiful sketch of The Eiffel Tower, incorporating the iconic writing of Disneyland Paris. Transition Year students coordinated a fun photo booth, where students queued up to wear some props and have their photo taken, with the background music of Edith Piaf resounding in the main entrance hall. Overall, the week was a tremendous success. French teachers Mme Cadinot, Mme Jully and Mme Owens all agree that the week was undoubtedly educational as well as enjoyable. From acting to treasure hunting, “la Semaine Française” allowed each student to become more accustomed to the French culture and way of life. Vive La France!
