Presentation College was one of ten schools selected in February to participate in this project. The pilot project involved undertaking Energy Efficiency upgraded work in the selected schools, monitoring the effectiveness of the work and utilising the knowledge gained to inform the development of future policy proposals and costing, associated with upgrading school buildings nationwide.
Work has just been completed on the replacement of every light fitting in the school with new energy efficient LED units. Public areas of the school now have lighting that turns off automatically when the area is not in use. All classrooms have had thermostats fitted which now control the heat output in each individual room. All Emergency Lighting in the school has been updated to current standards. A computer-based monitoring system of gas, water, and electricity use which will be accessible to staff and students to support teaching and learning around energy efficiency in a range of subject areas has been installed.
The upgrade was designed by Noel Lawler Consulting Engineers, Kilkenny and installed by Seamus Byrne Electrical, Carlow. A series of energy efficiency workshops provided by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland have commenced for students and staff.
