On February 1st, I began my Rotary Youth Leadership Award Experience, in Belfast, along with twenty-three other young people from all around Ireland. The first few days were filled with visits to Stormount, Leinster House, The Mansion House and The European Commission, where we were given a real insight into political life. The week culminated with a trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where we were given a tour of the building, and an audience with an MEP and were given the opportunity to discuss global issues with 500 other young people from across Europe. I was lucky enough to have been only one of twelve young people on the day, to address the Parliament on the issue on Human Rights. The entire experience was thoroughly enriching and enjoyable, and I have made friends and memories to last me a lifetime. I would sincerely like to thank Rotary Carlow for affording me this incredible opportunity and for all their support throughout the competition. (Aoife O’Sullivan, Fifth Year)
