Blue Monday: By Nessa Whelan
Blue Monday is considered to be the most depressing day of the year. It is typically the 3rd Monday of the year and this year it landed on the 20th of January.
To tackle the Monday blues, our Young St. Vincent De Paul group baked dozens of cupcakes. They were decorated with blue icing and blue sprinkles. Our group split up into smaller groups and walked around Carlow town going into different workplaces handing the cupcakes out for free to show our appreciation for the work being done in our community.
Some of the places we visited include the Garda Station, the Fire Station, St.Dymphna’s, St.Leo’s College, The Sacred Heart Hospital, Holy Angels, McDonald’s and smaller businesses including barbers, hairdressers, a cafè and different clothes shops. We also gave them to different people walking on the streets.
The YSVP group also made up bags of blue sweets including blue lollipops, blue bonbons and blue jellies. We sold these bags at break time to students and teachers before we left to give out the cupcakes. All money raised will go to our local SVP group in Carlow.
Our group believes that the day was a success and that it helped uplift the people’s moods in Carlow and it also uplifted our moods as we felt good about helping cheer up our community.
