Assessment in Junior Cycle

Assessment is about gathering information to measure the outcomes of learning.

Junior Cycle students will receive a Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA). The JCPA will report on a number of areas, including:

1. Subjects (State Certified Final Examinations)

2. Classroom Based Assessments

3. Other Learning Experiences (non-exam subjects, extra-curricular activities/school related achievements, key skills)

Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs):

CBAs will be undertaken during a defined time period within normal class contact time and to a national timetable. Students will complete one CBA in Second Year and one CBA in Third Year. The only exception is to this is in Irish where students will complete two CBAs in Third Year.

The school based CBA calendar is available for viewing on the school website. School CBA Timetable

CBAs will be reported on in the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement using the following descriptors:

·       Exceptional

·       Above Expectations

·       In Line with Expectations

·       Yet to Meet Expectations

·       Not Reported.

Assessment Tasks (AT):

Once the second CBA is completed, students in Third Year will complete a written Assessment Task. This task, set by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), is undertaken during normal class time and will be sent to the State Examinations Commission (SEC) for marking.

This Assessment Task will be worth 10% of the overall mark. This assessment task is completed in many Junior Cycle subjects but not in all.

State Certified Final Examinations:

At the end of Third Year, students will sit the State Certified Final Examinations in June. Junior Cycle 2024 Timetable
